நான் அமீரகத்திற்கு வந்த புதிது. ஒரு மின்னணு சாதனங்கள் செப்பனிடும் தொழிற்கூடத்தில் மேலாளராகச் சேர்ந்திருந்தேன். எங்கள் தொழிற்கூடத்தில் எல்லா வகையான மின்னணு சாதனங்களையும் செப்பனிடுவதுண்டு. ஒரு நாள் ஒரு வாடிக்கையாளர் வெகு அவசரமாக ஒரு தொலைக்காட்சிப் பெட்டியைக் கொண்டுவந்து இதை உடனே செப்பனிட வேண்டும் என்றார். அவர் ஓர் அராபியர். பொதுவாக பணியைத் தொடங்குவதற்கு முன்னதாக சிலர் செலவு எவ்வளவு ஆகும் என்ற மதிப்பீட்டைக் கோருவார்கள். அவர் தனக்கு அப்படியெல்லாம் ஒன்றும் வேண்டாம் என்றும் எவ்வளவு ஆனாலும் பரவாயில்லை பணி முடிந்து வரும்போது தனக்கு தொலைக்காட்சி பெட்டி வேண்டும் என்றார். எல்லாம் பேசி முடித்து ஒத்துக் கொண்டபின் அவர் போய் விட்டார். அந்த தொலைக்காட்சி பெட்டியில் LOT(line output transformer) என்ற சாதனம் பழுதாகி இருந்தது. அது எங்களிடம் இல்லாதததால் வெளியிலிருந்து வாங்கிவர நேரிட்டது. சற்று விலை கூடுதலான உதிரிப் பாகமும் கூட.
எங்கள் பணியகம் பதியம் 1-லிருந்து 4 மணிவரை உணவருந்துவதற்காகச் சாத்தப் பட்டிருக்கும். நான் மதிய உணவிற்குச் சென்றுவிட்டேன். சில பணியாளகள் பணிமனையிலேயே உணவருந்திவிட்டு சற்று ஓய்வெடுத்துக் கொள்வார்கள்.
நான் வழக்கம்போல் மதிய இடைவேளைக்குப் பின் அலுவலகம் திரும்பினேன். அலுவலக கட்டிடத்தை நெருங்கும்போது சாலையில் தொலைக்காட்சி பெட்டியன்று நொறுங்கிய நிலையில் கிடந்தது. ஒரு சிலர் ஆங்காங்கே நின்று பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். சற்று உற்றுப் பார்த்தபோதுதான் 'அவசரமாக வேண்டும்' என்று கொடுத்துவிட்டுப் போன அதே தொலைக் காட்சிப் பெட்டி என்று தெரிந்தது. எனக்கு ஒன்றும் புரியவில்லை. அலுவலகத்தினுள் சென்றவுடன் அந்த தொலைக் காட்சிப் பெட்டியைத் திருத்திய நபர். தலை கலைந்தவராக வியர்க்க விருவிருக்க நின்றிருந்தார். என்னவென்று வினவியபோது கதையை அவிழ்க்க ஆரம்பித்தார்.
சுமார் இரண்டரை மணியளவில் அந்த தொலைக் காட்சிப் பெட்டியைக் கொடுத்த அந்த நபர் வந்திருக்கிறார். வெளிக் கதவு சாத்தப் பட்டிருக்கவே அதைத் திறக்கும்படிக் கூறி, தன்னுடைய தொலைக் காட்சிப் பெட்டியைப் பெற்றுச் செல்வதற்காக வந்திருப்பதாகக் கூறியிருக்கிறார். தொலைக்காட்சிப் பெட்டிய திருத்திய ஊழியர், அது திருத்தப் பட்டுவிட்டதாகவும் நான்கு மணிக்கு மீண்டும் பணியகம் திறக்கும்போது வந்து பெற்றுக்கொள்ளும்படியும் கூறியிருக்கிறார். தொலைக் காட்சிப் பெட்டியைக் கொடுத்த அந்த நபர் ஒரு போலீஸ்காரர் என்பது அவர் சீருடையில் இருந்ததிலிருந்து தெரிய வந்திருக்கிறது. தாம் பணி முடிந்து நேரே வருவதாகவும் வீட்டிற்குப் போகும் வழியில் தொலைக் காட்சிப் பெட்டியைப் பெற்றுச் செல்ல வந்திருப்பதாகவும் கூறியிருக்கிறார். அதற்கு எங்கள் ஊழியர் அது 'மதிய உணவு இடைவேளை' என்றும் மேலும் மேலாளர் 4 மணிக்குத் திரும்புவார் என்றும் அந்த தொலைக்காட்சிப் பெட்டிக்கு எவ்வளவு செலவாகியிருக்கிறதென்ற விபரம் தனக்குத் தெரியாததால் 4 மணிக்கு வரும்படியும் கூறியிருக்கிறார். அதற்கு அந்த போலீஸ்காரர் தான் இல்லம் போய்த் திரும்ப நேரம் பிடிக்கும் என்றும் தன்னிடம் தற்போது பணம் இல்லாததையும், வீட்டிலிருந்துதான் எடுத்துவர வேண்டும் என்றும் தொ. கா. பெட்டியைத் தரும்படியும் கூறியிருக்கிறார். ஊழியர் மறுக்கவே வாய்ச் சண்டை முற்றி, இறுதியில் அந்த போலீஸ்கார் ஊழியரின் கழுத்தைப் பிடித்திருக்கிறார். அத்தோடு நிற்காமல் அந்த தொலைக் காட்சிப் பெட்டியை வெளியே எடுத்து வந்து சாலையில் எறிந்து விட்டார்.
தொ. கா. பெட்டியை திருத்திய அந்த ஊழியர் பம்பாய்காரர். நேரே 'பர்துபை' காவல் நிலையம் சென்று அங்கிருந்த மேலதிகாரியிடம் புகார் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார். விபரங்களைக் கூறி, தன் கழுத்தில் ஏற்பட்ட நகக் காயங்களையும் காட்டியிருக்கிறார். அந்த போலீஸ்காரரை விசாரிப்பதாக் கூறி ஊழியரை மருத்துவ மனைக்கு அனுப்பி வைத்திருக்கிறார் அந்த அதிகாரி. மருத்துவமனையிலிருந்து அந்த ஊழியர் திரும்பி வந்திருந்தபோதுதான் நான் அலுவலகம் திரும்பியிருக்கிறேன். சுமார் ஐந்து மணியிருக்கும். அந்த போலீஸ்காரர் அலுவலகத்தினுள் நுழைவதைக் கண்ட எனக்கு வயிற்றில் புளி கரைக்க ஆரம்பித்துவிட்டது. போலீஸ்காரன் சமாச்சாரம்தான் நமக்குத் தெரியுமே. போலீஸ்காரன் பொல்லாப்பு சங்லிப் பின்னல் மாதிரி போகுமே. ஏன் இந்த ஊழியன் இந்தச் சனியனை வாங்கிக் கட்டிக்கொண்டானோ? பேசாமல் தொ. கா. பெட்டியை அவனிடம் தந்திருக்கலாம்.
